Canadian Libraries Use by Immigrants from Ukraine: Work in Progress

Abstract

This presentation addresses the use of libraries by Ukrainian immigrants in Canada based on a mixed methods study conducted primarily in Saskatchewan and Alberta, Canada. The objectives are to investigate the frequency and purpose of library use by the participants, and their preference for library type and services. The findings are important for improving library services to immigrants and refugees.

Lana Soglasnova

Lana Soglasnova is a Librarian at the University of Toronto Robarts Library where she works as a Slavic Cataloguing Supervisor, South Asian Studies Liaison, and Linguistics Liaison. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Chicago, M.ISt. from the University of Toronto, and a B.A./M.A. in South Asian Studies (Sanskrit) from the University of Saint Petersburg, Russia. She has served on ALA ACRL ESS Slavic Cataloging and Metadata Committee, on the editorial team of the Slavic Cataloging Manual, the Committee on South Asian Libraries and Documentation, and South Asia Funnel. Her research interests include multilingualism in cataloging, linguistics, and poetics

Veronika Makarova
Department of Linguistics, University of Saskatchewan

Veronika Makarova is a Full Professor in the Department of Linguistics, at the University of Saskatchewan. She previously worked in universities in Japan, Russia, and the UK. She has published three edited books, one monograph, and over 100 academic research articles in leading international and national journals. She has received multiple Canadian (SSHRC, NFRF) and international grants. Her research interests include applied linguistics, bilingualism and multilingualism, sociolinguistics, and immigrant and ethnic studies.
